Isma Kambugu, a professional compound designer, observes that more people today have discovered the power of gardening in transforming their properties.
A well-planned garden does more than enhance the beauty of a home, it also increases its value and serves as a reliable source of fresh food.
Milly Ssebagala, who practices urban farming in Busunju, believes that a garden can completely change the outlook of a property.
“A home with a beautiful, well-maintained garden is more attractive. It adds life, improves air quality, and creates a relaxing environment,” she says.
Despite having a small compound, Ssebagala has transformed her space by growing vegetables in sacks, pots, and vertical gardens.
She grows tomatoes, sukuma wiki (collard greens), onions, and herbs such as rosemary and mint.
“These plants not only make my home look green and fresh, but they also save me money on groceries,” she explains.
Joseph Bukenya, another farmer, utilises every available space in his compound to grow food and flowers.
“Many people think you need a big piece of land to have a garden, but that’s not true. Even small spaces can be turned into productive gardens,” he says.
He has a mix of fruit trees, flowers, and vegetables strategically placed around his home. His front yard has neatly arranged potted plants, while the backyard is filled with bananas, passion fruits, and pumpkins.
How a garden adds value to your property
Kambugu says a garden makes a home look more attractive and inviting. Buyers are naturally drawn to houses with lush greenery and beautiful landscapes.
Trees, flowers, and lawns provide a serene atmosphere, making the home a peaceful retreat. Well-placed shade trees also keep the house cool, reducing energy costs.

Homes with gardens tend to fetch higher prices in the real estate market. “A property with a thriving garden can sell faster and at a better price,” says Bukenya.
Promotes Sustainability
Growing food at home reduces grocery expenses and ensures access to organic, chemical-free produce.
Ssebagala emphasises that having a food garden not only benefits her health but also contributes to environmental conservation.
A garden provides space for relaxation, outdoor dining, and family gatherings. Some homeowners even create garden patios, adding more functionality to their outdoor spaces.
Tips for starting a home garden
For homeowners looking to add value to their property with a garden, Ssebagala and Bukenya recommend:
Utilising small spaces by growing plants in containers, hanging gardens, or vertical structures.
Choosing low-maintenance plants that thrive in your climate.
Planting fruit trees and herbs to enjoy fresh produce while beautifying your home.
Maintaining a clean and organized look to enhance visual appeal.
Investing in proper soil care and composting for healthier plants.
