Samuel Nyabongo Kimoome, the proprietor of Kimoome Mixed Farm and a passionate dairy farmer, believes that a farmer’s love for animals directly influences the quality of their produce.

Kimoome, who has been a dairy farmer for over 15 years, describes his cows as part of his family.

He starts his day by personally checking on each one, calling them by name, and observing their behaviour.

“When you love your animals, you can easily notice when something is wrong. Their body language and feeding habits tell you a lot,” he explains.

His connection with his cows allows him to detect early signs of illness, ensuring they receive immediate veterinary care.

In Kamata village, Kyenjojo district, Phoebe Kagambe another farmer says raising animals is not just about business, it is a calling.

She has developed a special bond with her goats, and cows, ensuring that they are always comfortable.

“If you are harsh to your animals, they will be stressed, and their productivity will drop. But if you treat them well, they will reward you with good milk, and meat,” she says.

The secret to quality produce

Both farmers emphasise that animal welfare directly affects the quality of their produce.

Kimoome explains that when cows are stressed or poorly fed, their milk yield decreases, and the quality deteriorates.

He has invested in proper feeding programmes, ensuring his cows graze on nutrient-rich pastures and receive supplements when necessary.

Imelda Kasi, a chicken famer says the secret to high-quality eggs and healthy poultry lies in proper housing and feeding.

“Chickens need space, clean water, and a good diet. If you keep them in dirty or cramped conditions, they become sickly and lay fewer eggs,” she says.

How to show love to your animals

Farmers can develop a strong bond with their animals by practicing proper care and handling techniques.

Kimoome advises farmers to;

  • Provide nutritious food and clean water daily.
  • Ensure comfortable housing with adequate space and ventilation.
  • Regularly groom and check their animals for signs of illness.
  • Interact with their animals through gentle handling and positive reinforcement.
  • Offer timely medical care and vaccinations to prevent diseases.

Enjoying the rewards of love

“My cows produce more milk because they are stress-free and happy,” Kimoome says.

Kasi, on the other hand, enjoys selling quality poultry products because her birds are well taken care of.
