Best Farmer Training Youths On Value Addition

Brenda Tusiime, a determined entrepreneur from Fort Portal, has turned her passion for farming into a thriving business while training and mentoring over 50 youths in value addition.

Through her company, Mema Agro-Organic Processors, she is not only producing high-quality pumpkin flour but also empowering young people to find opportunities in agribusiness.

She recognised that adding value to farm produce could create a more sustainable business while improving nutrition in her community.

This realisation led her to establish a business that processes pumpkins into flour, a highly nutritious product that benefits children, the elderly, and those facing malnutrition.

Her pumpkin flour project has created employment opportunities for young people by involving them in different stages of the value chain, from farming and harvesting to processing and packaging.

She trains youth in modern farming practices, post-harvest handling, and how to add value to raw agricultural products. Many of the young people she has mentored have gone on to start their own businesses or improve their family farms.

Impact on youth and farmers

Through her mentorship, Tusiime has helped over 50 youths gain practical skills in agribusiness.

She provides training on value addition, business management, and product marketing. Many of these young people, who previously struggled to find stable employment, have now embraced farming and processing as a source of income.

By working closely with local farmers, she also ensures a steady supply of quality pumpkins for processing. Farmers benefit from her expertise as she provides seeds and technical guidance to help them improve their yields.

Her approach not only secures raw materials for her business but also boosts incomes for farmers, creating a ripple effect of economic growth in the region.

Community recognition

Lawrence Mpamiire, who works with Mema Agro-Organic Processors, says Tusiime’s efforts have inspired many in Fort Portal.

He acknowledges her ability to uplift the community by training and supporting young entrepreneurs.

“Tusiime is not just running a business; she is creating opportunities for others. She has shown that value addition can transform agriculture and improve livelihoods,” Mpamiire says.

Christine Kambabazi, a close friend, admires Tusiime’s dedication to helping vulnerable groups, particularly children and the elderly.

“Her nutritious pumpkin flour has made a difference in fighting malnutrition. What stands out most is her commitment to mentoring women and youth, helping them gain skills that make them self-reliant,” Kambabazi says.
