Treat Farming As A Business To Reap Big

At the Harvest Money Expo in Namboole Stadium, there is a lot more than farming to take home. The three-day event is bustling with streams of people walking up and down the exhibitors’ stalls. This is the place to be.

One of the important things you can learn from the expo training sessions is in tandem with the event’s theme, Farming as a Business: Value Addition and Cooperatives.

During one of the sessions, Himanshu Kumar, the CEO of Mandela Millers, which is part of the Mandela Group of Companies, urged the audience to seriously consider farming as a business and run it like a company.

“What people need to succeed as a business are three things: money, growth, and fun. However, the problem is that some concentrate on the fun only.”

Kumar thus advised the listeners to have good leadership that keeps an inventory and records of their produce; focus on spending time on the business; and growing their customer base by thinking about the produce they plant so that buyers will be happy in the end.

He also asked them to keep up with the trends. For example, what are the best farming practices and fertilisers?

Sponsored by Engsol, aBi, Kingdom of Netherlands, Pepsi, Bella Wine, and Uganda Development Corporation (UDC). As it closes on Sunday, the expo will have more training sessions at a fee of sh10,000. The entrance fee is also sh10,000.
