Alice Nalubwama recently acquired four acres in Nalusuga village, Wakiso district, with plans to embark on serious farming. However, she is worried about investing her money and facing potential disappointments.

She seeks guidance on how to proceed wisely and avoid regrets.

Gideon Zakke, an agronomist, explains that starting a farm is an exciting venture, whether for smallholder farming or large-scale commercial operations.

He says one of the most critical decisions a farmer makes is choosing the right location for their farm.

“This decision affects everything from the productivity of your crops to the health of your livestock, your profitability, and even your long-term sustainability,” Zakke says.

Proper site selection ensures a solid foundation for success, helping mitigate potential risks and maximise farming potential.

Zakke adds that picking the right site goes beyond simply owning land, it involves understanding the factors that make it suitable for farming.

“You need to analyze the soil type, water availability, climate, and access to markets. Each of these factors plays a significant role in your farm’s success,” he explains.

Soil quality

The quality of soil is fundamental to farming. Fertile soil with the right balance of nutrients is essential for healthy plant growth. Testing the soil for its pH, texture, and fertility is a critical first step.

“If you are unsure about the soil quality,” Zakke advises, “engage an expert to perform a soil test and recommend the best crops for your land.”

Water availability

Farming without a reliable water source is a gamble. Whether for irrigation or livestock, water is indispensable.

Kenneth Kabagambe, a commercial farmer in Nyabugorogoro village, Kyenjojo district, explains that choosing a farm site near a sustainable water source should be a top priority.

He states, “Determination and consulting the right experts lead to informed decisions.”

Ensuring access to clean and adequate water significantly reduces costs and minimises the risk of crop failure.

 Climate suitability

Every crop and livestock type has its specific climate requirements. Understanding the climatic conditions of your area such as temperature, rainfall, and humidity is vital for choosing the right farming enterprise.

Zakke says certain crops may thrive in drier regions, while others require a wet climate.

Accessibility to markets

Farmers need to sell their produce efficiently and at competitive prices. The location of your farm in relation to markets and transportation infrastructure affects your profitability.

Kasi Kibuule, a commercial farmer from Kawumu village in Luwero district, underscores the importance of this factor.

“My farm’s location near good roads and markets has been crucial for timely delivery and reduced transportation costs,” she says.

Being near markets also ensures fresher produce and higher returns.

Expert guidance

Engaging knowledgeable professionals can make all the difference in the success of your farming venture.

Kibuule credits her success to consistent advice from agricultural experts.

“From soil testing to water management, the input of experts has helped me avoid costly mistakes and make the most of my land,” she says.

Before acquiring land, it is essential to ensure that it is legally owned and free from disputes. Engage local authorities to verify land ownership and boundaries.

Building good relationships with the surrounding community can foster cooperation and minimise conflicts.

Kabagambe believes that determination and working with the right people are vital to achieving success in farming.

“You need to approach farming with the mindset of a businessperson,” he says.
