Heavy Rains Stop In Two Weeks

The ongoing rains that have devastated infrastructure like the road network, displaced households like it is Kigezi region, washed away food items in different parts of the country is to reduce in the next two weeks.

This was revealed by the manager weather forecasting at the Uganda National Meteorology Authority, George William Omonyi.

According to Omonyi, farmers should take advantage of the two-week dry spell to weed plants, but also put in place measures of handling the harvest, ahead of other rains, expected at the end of June.

In an interview on Thursday, Omonyi also explained that the current rain was predicted at the start of the current season, adding that they are now on a declining trend, ahead of the dry spell, which will also be short lived.

He was responding to concerns from the public, especially the farming community of the heavy rains that are likely to affect the productivity of some crops.

The country has of late been undergoing heavy rains that have not destroyed crops, households but also infrastructure like roads, bridges, and also bursting river banks of especially rivers in the South Western parts of the country.

Water sources that have flooded further include R. Rwizi in Mbarara, R. Nyamwamba in Kasese, R. Lamia in Bundibugyo among others.

In terms of food loss, farmers in Kigezi region, who had planted crops on the hilly areas, haven’t been spared due to the topography of their area.
