The Chief of Defence Forces(CDF), General Wilson Mbadi has presided over the handover office of the commander of the Fisheries Protection Unit that was occupied by  Lt Col Dick Kaija.

Kaija on December 4 2023 handed over office to Lt Col Mercy Tukahirwa as Commander of the Fisheries Protection Unit that was held at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs headquarters, Mbuya according to the UPDF press statement.

At the event, Gen Mbadi commended the outgoing Fisheries Protection Unit Commander, Kaija for his efforts in fighting criminality on the lakes and bad fishing practices.

The CDF informed the meeting that it’s a military routine and practice of serving within the UPDF to change office.

Gen Mbadi emphasized that the outgoing commander not only enforced the fisheries law but educated the fishermen about the guidelines on fishing, transportation and licensing of fish and its products.

He also lauded Kaija for his efforts in fighting illegal fishing practices which were depleting the lake and creating room for fish to increase hence increasing revenue to the government.

Lt Col Kaija in his remarks urged members to accord the same support and loyalty they accorded him to the new commander as he thanked Officers and militants who supported him during his tour of duty.

Lt Col Tukahirwa expressed her gratitude to the leadership of UPDF for entrusting her with the position of commander and pledged to serve diligently.

Tukahirwa also paid her respects to the outgoing commander and called for the full cooperation from officers and men of the Fisheries Protection Unit.

In attendance were Commander Special Forces Command, Brig Gen David Mugisha and Commander Marines Brig Gen Micheal Nyarwa, among others.

Research by the Defense Technical Information Centre indicates that Generally, women are looked at as weak feeble creatures, vulnerable, submissive, not to be taken serious, and last but not least nurturers.

Women are constantly having to prove themselves daily to their male counterparts that we are, if not, just as tactically and technically proficient in order to be heard.

Because of this handicap most women have shorten their careers because of the many obstacles they are faced with, in the end it is just not worth the fight.

For the many women who have stuck around they have over come various obstacles that were placed in their path on a daily basis. And they are now making a difference for our future female leaders, they may not see a change in there careers but for those who are following in their foot steps change is evident.
