Dr Yona Baguma New NARO DG

Dr Yona Baguma the new director general of National Agriculture Research Organisation at a past event.

Dr Yona Baguma has been appointed the new director general of the National Agriculture Research Organisation (NARO).  

At the time of his appointment, Baguma has been the deputy director general in charge of research. 

He takes over from Dr Ambrose Agona, who retires Friday, April 21, 2023. Agona was appointed to the role in 2015 following the death of Dr Emily Kabushenga Twinamatsiko. 

Confirming the appointment, the Minister of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries, Frank Tumwebaze, thanked Agona for his efforts. 

“I wish to thank Dr Ambrose Agona for his efforts in leading our agricultural research agenda, NARO continues to develop highly resilient seed varieties that sustain our production,” said Tumwebaze in a tweet. 

“Congratulations Dr Yona Baguma & wish you all the best,” the minister said. 

Commenting on the appointment, Dr Godfrey Asea, the director of the National Crop Resources Research Institute (NaCRRI) congratulated the pair. 

“Huge congratulations to the two icons in Agri research, Dr Yona all the best in the new challenge, Dr Agona congratulations for successfully completing the challenge,” Asea said in a tweet. 

Tom Omute, a university don also congratulated the pair; “Bravo Dr Ambrose Agona, you led a team that greatly expanded NARO’s influence and contributions to the national economy through cutting-edge research. Yona Baguma is another great team player and excellent achiever.”
